What is Pozo Azul in Minca?
Pozo Azul (the Blue Pool) is a series of natural pools and small waterfalls formed by the river flowing down from the Sierra Nevada. Its fresh, turquoise-tinted water made it one of Minca’s most popular outings: perfect for a swim, jumping from the rocks (carefully) and relaxing surrounded by jungle.
How to get to Pozo Azul
It sits about 3 km from Minca town, along the road up toward La Tagua. Three options:
- Motorbike taxi: the fastest and most used. The ride takes around 10 minutes on an unpaved road.
- Walking: about 40–50 minutes uphill — a lovely hike if you have time and proper footwear.
- 4×4 or high-clearance car: the road is steep and uneven in places.
Entry fee & opening hours
The main pool has traditionally been free to access. Some private sections or viewpoints charge a small maintenance fee (around 5,000–10,000 COP). Bring small cash notes, as card is rarely accepted and there are no ATMs nearby. Visit during daylight, ideally between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Best time to visit
Go early in the morning or on a weekday. Weekends and holidays get busy, mostly with visitors from Santa Marta. Arriving before 10 a.m. means calmer water, better photos and a more relaxed vibe.
What to bring & safety tips
- Grippy footwear — the rocks are slippery.
- Swimwear, a towel and a waterproof bag for your phone.
- Cash, water and biodegradable sunscreen.
- Don’t jump into water of unknown depth and respect the signage.
- Take your rubbish with you: Minca is an eco-destination and conservation is everyone’s job.
