Dry and rainy seasons
Minca has a tropical mountain climate with two clear patterns. The dry season runs from December to March, with clear days and firm trails — the best window for waterfalls, viewpoints and the Cerro Kennedy sunrise. Around July there’s a drier spell known as the "veranillo". The rainiest months are April–May and September–November, when it usually rains in the afternoon or at night, leaving mornings ideal for getting out.
Temperature by altitude
Because it sits in the Sierra Nevada, temperature depends on elevation:
- Minca town (~600 m): generally milder and more humid than Santa Marta.
- Mid areas (Marinka, coffee farms): spring-like weather, great for walking.
- High areas (Los Pinos, Cerro Kennedy, ~2,800 m): cold, especially before dawn; pack warm layers.
When is the best time to go?
If you want clear skies and sharp views, aim for the dry season (December–March) or the July veranillo. If you prefer greener jungle and fewer people, the rainy months are also a good time — just plan activities for the morning.
What to pack
- Light, breathable clothing for the day.
- A warm layer for nights and higher areas (essential if you go up Cerro Kennedy).
- A light rain jacket or poncho.
- Grippy footwear, insect repellent and sunscreen.
